How to Update Your SMTP Server Settings in Gmail

Gmail allows their users to add external email accounts and use them in tandem with their Gmail account as an alias. If you are one of many clients who chooses to manage your domain email account with Gmail, you may need to update your SMTP server settings periodically in order to send and receive domain email through your Gmail account.

Here are the standard instructions for updating SMTP server settings in Gmail.

Step 1

Locate the Settings area in your Gmail account by clicking on the gear icon in the upper right corner of your screen. Next, click on the 'Accounts and Import' tab.

Step 2

On the next screen, locate your domain email account in the list of email accounts. On the right side, across from the domain email account, click on the link that says 'Edit settings'.

Now you are ready to walk through the steps in the popup window. You will need to know your domain email address and password to complete these steps.

Step 3

Box 1: Enter your desired name in the Name field, and check the box to Treat as an alias. Click 'Next Step' to move forward.

Box 2: On the next screen, change your SMTP Server to the current mail server. This will typically be 'mail.yourdomainURL.com'. For example, if your website is GoCubs.com, you would enter 'mail.gocubs.com'. Your Username should be your full domain email address, and you should enter your domain email password in the Password field. Use Port 465. The radio buttons should indicate Secured connection using SSL (recommended). Click 'Save Changes' to save your changes.

If nothing happens after you complete these steps, you've most likely completed the changes successfully. This would be a great time to send a test email to someone you love. If you get an error, try going through the steps again, making sure that your username (email address) and password are entered correctly, and your mail server address is updated.

If all else fails, give us a call or open a support ticket and we will help you troubleshoot the issue.
